Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
